Thomas, Ref./7-2/ has developed the following correlation for the mean visible flame height or length for the calm wind situation:

Although this correlation was originally developed on the basis of laboratory scaled experiments with wood crib fires, it has been shown that this correlation represents flame length data for large hydrocarbon pool fires as well.
1) Due to the fact that the flame length fluctuates considerably during time, the mean or average flame length is defined as the length at which the flame length is equal to or above 50 per cent of the time.
